Google Vids

Overview

Google Vids is an AI video creation app built into Google Workspace. It is aimed at making work videos quickly: product demos, internal updates, training clips, event recaps and report walkthroughs. You describe what you want, or point it at a Slides deck or a Drive file, and it drafts the outline, scenes, script, voiceover and media for you to edit.

It is deliberately not a general-purpose video editor and not an open-ended text to video generator like Runway or Sora. The clips it generates are short inserts for a larger edit, and the editing model is a browser timeline rather than a full nonlinear editor.

Creating

• Help me create: Give it a prompt and optionally mention Drive files or Slides decks. It returns a suggested outline, scenes with generated text, stock and Drive media, a script, an AI voiceover, and video placeholders you can fill with generated clips.
• Slides to Vids: Each slide becomes a scene and the speaker notes become the spoken script. This is the fastest path if the deck already exists.
• Templates: Starting points for product demos, reports, events and celebrations.
• Blank vid: A manual editor when you want to assemble it yourself.

AI clips and media

• Veo clip generation: Veo 2 is the default. Veo 3 is offered as an experimental option that generates audio with the clip, is slower, and is not available everywhere.
• AI avatars: Preset avatars, each with its own look and built-in voice. Languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Korean and Japanese.
• Music generation: Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro generate 30 second clips or full tracks up to 3 minutes.
• Image generation and editing: Built in, with shared limits across Workspace apps such as Slides and Docs.
• Stock library: Google stock footage, images and music, plus royalty free assets.

Recording and editing

• Recording studio: Record yourself, your screen, or both, with a teleprompter read along option.
• Transcript trimming: One click removes filler words such as “um” and “uh” and long pauses from the audio. English only.
• Timeline editing: Add audio, text, shapes and lines, set transitions between scenes, add animations, and apply photo effects.
• Object tracks: Attach a label to an object so it stays put when you change the framing.
• Balance sound: Levels the mix so you are not constantly riding the volume fader.
• Import from Drive: Edit video files that already live in Drive.

There is no standalone purchase. Vids ships with Google Workspace, and the AI features are metered per month by edition.

• Free (no Workspace): The editor works with just a Google Account. No AI generation.
• Business Starter: 20 AI clips and 10 avatars per month.
• Business Standard: 50 AI clips and 25 avatars per month.
• Business Plus: 200 AI clips and 100 avatars per month.

Limitations

• Generated clips are 8 seconds at 720p and 24fps. Fine for inserts, not for hero footage.
• Avatars are preset personas. You cannot build a custom avatar from a consented actor.
• Most AI features are English only.
• Desktop browser only. There is no mobile app.
• Admins can switch Vids off, and it is unavailable where Google Docs is disabled.
• Video length is capped at 30 minutes.
