Bottom line up front: Google Vids is the best AI video app for turning work you already have into a narrated video. If a deck, a report or a Drive document is the source material, nothing else in this category gets from that to a shareable explainer this fast. The catch is that it is a work video tool, not a creator tool: clips are 8 seconds at 720p, avatars are preset, and there is no mobile app. If you already pay for Workspace it is close to free value. If you do not, the marginal cost is a whole new subscription.

What is Google Vids?

Google Vids is an AI video creation app inside Google Workspace, positioned as an AI tool for work rather than a general editor. You start from a prompt, a template, a blank project, your camera, or a Slides deck, and the app assembles an outline, scenes, script, voiceover and media that you then edit in the browser.

That framing matters for everything below. Vids is not trying to be Premiere or a Runway competitor. It is trying to remove the blank page between “we have information” and “we have a video to send to the team.”

What it actually does well

Slides to Vids is the killer feature

Each slide becomes a scene and the speaker notes become the spoken script. For the enormous number of teams whose internal communication is already slide decks, this is a genuine step change. You do not re-enter content, and you do not record a voiceover separately.

Help me create drafts the whole thing

Give it a prompt and mention a Drive file or a Slides deck, and it returns a suggested outline, scenes with generated text, stock and Drive media, a script, an AI voiceover, and placeholders for the video clips. It is not going to win a creative award, but it gets you to 70% of a first draft in a way that is genuinely hard to do from scratch.

The editing layer is better than the generation layer

This is the part that surprised us most. Transcript-based trimming removes filler words and long pauses from your audio in one click, and the teleprompter read along mode makes recording a narration take unremarkable. Object tracks, scene transitions, animations and a balance sound control round out a small but competent timeline.

For narrated, slide-driven videos, that is the entire feature set you actually need, and Vids has all of it.

What it does not do

Avatars are preset, and that is a real limit

Vids launched with 12 preset avatars and now covers 8 languages. They are good, and Google says they get preferred five times more often than avatars on other platforms. But they are a fixed cast. You cannot build an avatar of yourself, your CEO, or a consented actor, which is precisely what buyers of HeyGen and Synthesia are paying for. If presenter identity matters to you, this is where Vids stops being an option.

The generation ceiling is low

Generated clips are 8 seconds, 720p, 24fps, and Google caps the daily generation at 20 videos including 10 on Veo 3. This is an insert library, not a hero shot generator. If your video depends on long generated takes, Vids is the wrong tool.

The quotas are tight, and they are per month

Monthly limits are the part to price carefully. Business Standard, the most common tier, gives you 50 AI clips and 25 avatar generations per month. Note that the avatar and clip counters can be pooled in some plans, so a team that leans on avatars can eat into its clip budget. Music generation has separate account-specific limits, split between 30 second clips and full tracks up to 3 minutes.

The floor: Business Starter’s 20 clips and 10 avatars per month is roughly one internal video a month. Real usage will exhaust it.

Desktop only, and admin gated

There is no mobile app. And an admin can turn Vids off, or disable it entirely by turning off Google Docs for the domain. In a locked-down enterprise account you may have a Google Workspace subscription and still have no Vids. Worth checking before you build a workflow on it.

Pricing

There is no standalone purchase and no separate Vids trial. AI features ride on the Workspace edition you already have.

  • No Workspace (free Google Account): the editor works, none of the AI does.
  • Business Starter: 20 AI clips, 10 avatars, 20 music clips per month.
  • Business Standard: 50 AI clips, 25 avatars, 50 music clips per month.
  • Business Plus: 200 AI clips, 100 avatars, 250 music clips per month.

Unlimited regardless of tier: Help me create, AI voiceovers, background removal, and Slides to Vids without avatars. Video length caps at 30 minutes, and Drive videos you import for editing can be up to 35 minutes and 4 GB.

Who should use it

  • Teams whose source material is already in Workspace, especially decks
  • Internal comms, training, onboarding and sales demo workflows
  • Anyone who wants a narrated explainer without opening an NLE
  • Organizations already paying for Business Standard or Plus, where the marginal cost is zero

Who should not

  • Creators making publish-grade YouTube or social video
  • Anyone who needs a custom, consented avatar
  • Teams that need 4K, long generated takes, or real compositing
  • Anyone who needs mobile

Verdict

Google Vids is a strong, opinionated tool that solves one problem very well: getting a work video out of work documents. The Drive and Slides integration is the differentiator, the editing layer is unexpectedly complete for its scope, and the price is close to zero if you are already a Workspace customer. The preset avatar cast, 720p clip ceiling, monthly quotas and desktop-only design keep it firmly out of the creator-tool category.
